Guest Biography
Karen began working in early childhood
programs as a preschool teacher in 1975. After obtaining her masters
degree in 1980, she became Director of Illinois State University (ISU)
Child Care Center, as well as instructor in child development for
the ISU Family and Consumer Sciences Department.
Since 1980 she has also served as instructor, trainer, and presenter for early childhood professionals and parents in community college, university, hospital out-reach, and conference settings. She was president of Midwest Association for the Education of Young Children from 1990 to 1992. First issued in 1995, she continues to write a weekly newspaper column for parents in her local newspaper, The Pantagraph.
Karen is author of The Child Care Professional and co-author of The Child and Adult Care Professional, both from Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Publishing. She also published Block Adventures: Building Creativity and Concepts Through Block Play for First Teacher Press and is long-time contributor to Child Care Information Exchange.
In November 2002, Karen's monthly advice column for parents and child care professionals took flight nationally under the title Parenting Exchange. In addition, her Parenting Exchange Library stocks over 90 parenting resource columns on a wide range of topics, such as: building children's self esteem, nurturing brain development, coping with children's fears, connecting children with nature and guiding behavior positivelyto name but a few. Parenting Exchange is located at www.ChildCareExchange.com, the web site of the well-respected magazine Child Care Information Exchange and Exchange Press, Inc.
