The Illinois Early Learning Standards recognize the interconnectedness of emotional, social, cognitive, and physical development and learning—the whole child. Areas of learning included in the standards are Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, Social Science, Physical Development and Health, Fine Arts, Foreign Language, and Social/Emotional Development. Performance assessment is an approach to assessment that is being widely used in early childhood classrooms throughout the country. Authentic performance assessment includes three components—developmental checklists, portfolios, and reports to parents. In this Chat, Barbara Grace answered questions such as, “Are certain methods of assessment mandated or recommended by the Illinois Early Learning Standards?” “Can you tell us what makes a high-quality portfolio?” “How are performance assessments used in the learning process?” “Does the state use students' performance assessments in evaluating preschool programs?” “Does a child need to meet the benchmarks listed in the Illinois Early Learning Standards to be considered ready for kindergarten?”
