The Illinois Early Learning Standards—32 goals, 62 standards, and 105 benchmarks—support a common learning experience for all young children in Illinois. The Illinois Early Learning Standards were designed to be the first step in creating effective preschool curricula. They apply to the whole child, including his or her social-emotional needs. This Chat discusses questions such as, “Why do we need early learning standards in Illinois—why were they developed and by whom?” “Should curriculum be designed around the standards?” “Can you give me examples of using the various benchmarks to enrich my preschool?” “Can the standards be used with a Project Approach curriculum?”
