Live Interactive Chat

November 17-19, 2003Communicating with Parents during Sensitive or Difficult SituationsKaren Stephens
Director of Illinois State University Child Care Center

This Chat explores preventive strategies, as well as solutions for concerns or problems, that early childhood professional can keep in mind when communicating with parents. Questions discussed include, “When I try to talk to his parents, they just say ‘He's never like that at home.’ Any suggestions?” “Can you suggest a way to get through to parents who aren't taking my concerns seriously?” “How can I tactfully approach a child’s parents about having him evaluated?” “I feel parents need to know a child is aware and upset about problems at home, but I'm afraid discussing domestic problems with the parents might get the child in trouble or embarrass them.”
